Why I Chose to Embrace Kauai over Maui and Other Hawaiian Islands

Island life has always been a dream for me, but it wasn't until I made the decision to relocate to Hawaii that I truly understood the complexities of choosing one island over another. Having lived on Maui for almost 14 years, and gained a deep appreciation for its charm and character, I was hesitant to step out of my familiar surroundings. However, a series of events led me to Kauai, where I now reside in a charming community in Princeville.

An Old Love Restored

Kauai has always had a special place in my heart. Despite its higher cost of living and limited amenities, it offered something that Maui could not: a more authentic connection with nature and a slower pace of life. The decision to buy a place in Princeville came after a visit to Maui that left me alarmed by the rapid developments that were turning natural landscapes into tourist destinations.

Life in Kauai: Navigating Costs and Benefits

Settling in Kauai presented its own set of challenges and rewards. While it is more expensive than some other islands, the environment and quality of life more than compensated for the financial burden. My weekly trip to Costco in Lihue, combined with local markets like those in Princeville and Hanalei, kept costs in check. Regular deliveries of organic fruit and vegetables, as well as the convenience of Amazon, helped maintain a healthy lifestyle without breaking the bank.

The highlight of Kauai life was undoubtedly the numerous opportunities for picnicking; from Ke'e Tunnels and Hanalei to Waimea Canyon and Hanapepe. These excursions not only offered stunning views but also provided moments of silence and reflection amidst the natural splendor of the island.

Preparing for the Future: The Impact of Natural Forces

One of the reasons that initially drew me to Kauai was its stability compared to other islands. Yet, just as I was setting up my life, the island faced its own challenges. In 2013, Kauai was hit by a minor hurricane, serving as a wake-up call to the unpredictability of nature. This experience reinforced my appreciation of the island's natural beauty and resilience.

My Journey and Reflection

After 2013, I made the difficult decision to sell my property in Kauai and move to New Zealand, relocating with many fond memories. Over the years, the world and the islands have undergone significant changes. Maui, for one, has experienced substantial development, but it has not lost its unique charm. However, Kauai remains a haven for those seeking a more natural, less commercialized island life.

As I reflect on my time on Hawaii, I am reminded that each island has its own unique allure. While Maui offered a balanced lifestyle, Kauai provided a deeply personal connection to nature. The enduring appeal of Kauai lies not just in its beauty but in the way it challenges us to live in harmony with the environment.

Final Thoughts

While the world outside undergoes constant change, the essence of island life remains. For those looking to escape the rush of city life and immerse themselves in natural beauty, Kauai offers a sanctuary unmatched by any other Hawaiian island.
