Why I Chose to Call Cape Town Home: A Journey Through Decision and Destiny
There isn't one specific reason that 'drove' me to choose Cape Town. It's more about a series of decisions that led to my choice. Growing up far from Cape Town, my decision to attend Stellenbosch University became the first step toward my journey here.
Stellenbosch: A Gateway to Cape Town
Stellenbosch University was always my top choice, and while it's located about 40 km from the Cape Town city centre, it is the perfect starting point. The university is nestled in a stunning environment surrounded by winelands and mountains, just 25 km from the coast. The lush nature and proximity to both the city center and the sea created a unique and inviting atmosphere. The combination of this breathtaking environment, the exciting opportunities in the tech sector, and a vibrant cultural life made the decision to study here an easy one.
An Unforeseen Move
My whole family eventually moved to Cape Town, leaving me with no choice but to join them. While staying in Cape Town was initially a choice, I quickly fell in love with the vibe of the city. The charm and vibrancy of Cape Town appealed to me in ways I couldn't have anticipated.
Young and Adventurous: 1981
In 1981, I applied to universities in Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town. Being accepted by all three presented me with a choice. I picked Cape Town because I had relatives attending university there. Initially, I had never visited Cape Town and knew very little about it. This decision proved to be my lucky break, as I've stayed in Cape Town ever since.
Factors Shaping My Stay
Over the years, I've accumulated numerous reasons to love living in Cape Town. The most significant is undoubtedly the beauty of the place. The city offers a perfect blend of natural wonders and an outdoor lifestyle. From the iconic Table Mountain to the lush beaches, the visual splendor of Cape Town is unmatched. My family and I enjoy hikes, beach days, and outdoor adventures, making Cape Town a paradise for those who love nature.
While like any city, Cape Town faces its challenges, there are dedicated individuals and groups working tirelessly to address these issues. The sense of community and the support we receive from our neighbors give us confidence that together, we can overcome the hurdles and continue to thrive.
In conclusion, choosing to call Cape Town home was a journey through personal decision and destiny. It's not just about the environment or the opportunities but about the lifestyle and the sense of belonging that Cape Town offers. Whether it's the stunning views or the vibrant cultural scene, there are countless reasons why Cape Town remains my home.
