Traveling from Kolkata to Guwahati: A Comprehensive Guide for Motorists
Many enthusiasts and travelers have experienced the challenging road conditions between Kolkata and Guwahati. This journey, although fraught with difficulties, holds a special place for those who have ventured into it, sharing their experiences and insights with fellow road travelers.
Recent Road Conditions and Experiences
9 Months Ago: While I haven't personally undertaken the journey from Kolkata to Guwahati, I do have extensive experience traveling the Guwahati-Lucknow sector just last September. It should be noted that general road conditions in both West Bengal and Assam are subpar, particularly on what are considered to be four-lane highways. A mere 77 kilometers near Siliguri took over five hours to cover, which is exceptionally slow. This stretch is a two-lane national highway once one crosses the state border into Assam, and it is riddled with deep potholes and slow-moving trucks.
The Northeast region is far from being a priority for the government. Neglect in infrastructure development is rampant, and real-time information on road conditions is scarce. It is quite difficult to gauge the extent of the damage during monsoon season. Travelers are strongly advised to avoid these routes during the rainy months when the depth and sheer depth of the potholes can be hazardous.
Historical Travel Experience
Formerly, the journey from Agartala to Kolkata via Silong, Guwahati, Alipur Duar, and Siliguri was quite a pleasant experience. With night halts in hotels and PWD Rest Houses along the way, it was a comfortable and enjoyable trip. However, the current road conditions have significantly deteriorated, making it a more challenging journey than it once was.
Key Points for Travelers
Road Quality: The four-lane highways in West Bengal and Assam are not up to the standards expected on well-developed roads. Expect multiple hours to traverse short distances due to potholes and slow-moving traffic. Badges and Traffic: Once you enter Assam, you'll encounter two-lane national highways with deep potholes and heavy traffic, making the journey slower and more challenging. Risk During Monsoon: During the monsoon season, it's essential to stay informed of road conditions and avoid traveling on these routes due to decreased visibility and potential safety hazards from poorly maintained roads. Bridge Conditions: Be prepared for one-way bridges, which can increase your travel time. While motorcycling or driving a car offers a unique adventure along this route, the difficulties and inherent risks make it a less desirable choice for most travelers. If you're planning a trip between these two cities, consider the recent developments in the journey and the practical implications before setting out on your trip.
