The Yells and Cheers at Oktoberfest: German Traditions and Yackety Yankees
At Oktoberfest, a spirited festival celebrated in Munich, Germany, the atmosphere is electric and filled with a variety of vocalizations. While many visitors excitedly believe they hear yells, it’s more about shouted orders, hearty choruses, and the occasional “Zum Wohl” that adds to the fun.
What Do They Yell?
Contrary to popular belief, the Bavarians don’t revel in loud yells. Instead, they love a good song, particularly the rousing “Ein Prosit” which isn’t exactly a yell but a joyful expression. For American and other tourists, however, Oktoberfest can be quite the “novelty factor”. They may holler and shout because they’re not used to such a large gathering of inebriated individuals. While it may seem chaotic, it’s simply a part of the experience at this grand Bavarian festival.
The Sound of Oktoberfest: Yelling and Singing
Okay, while singing is indeed compulsory (and often ends up as shouting), there are specific yells that are part of Oktoberfest’s tradition:
Oan Zwoa G’suffa!
This iconic Bavarian phrase means "one two guzzle!" It's shouted during the singing of a traditional beer-song, Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit, which means "A Toast to Good Cheer." It's a playful way to engage in the festivities and get everyone involved. Australians perhaps have a similar tradition of shouting "scull" when someone attempts to chug a large drink.
Living Next Door to Alice
One of the favorites among the music played by bands in the beer tents is a British rock song from 1972, Living Next Door to Alice. After the last line of the chorus, the audience traditionally shouts, "Who the Fuck is Alice?" This adds an impromptu and humorous element to the event, making the experience even more memorable.
The Munich Lions Club: A Unique Aspect of Oktoberfest
On the first Sunday of Oktoberfest, a unique spectacle unfolds at the Brurosl tent—a part of the Münchener L?wenclub (Munich Lions Club). Contrary to what one might think, this club is not related to the service club, but a group of gay men who enjoy their taste for leather and erotic indulgences. Over the course of the evening, it's very likely that one or two of them will yell "Ouch!" as a part of their fun and zestful celebration.
Enjoy Oktoberfest with a newfound appreciation for its yells and cheers, and perhaps even a shout or two of your own!
