Sailing Dreams and Realities: A Sailor's Journey Through the Oceans
As I stand on my boat in St Lucia, my thoughts often drift to the vast and unexplored realms of the Pacific and Caribbean. With many islands to revisit, each one holds its own unique charm and history. However, my love for sailing is not just about the destinations; it's about the journey, the people, and the adventure that comes with each sail.
Heartfelt Longing to Sail Again
My longing for the sea has fueled countless dreams and adventures. Islands like Borneo beckon me to revisit them, each with its own history and culture to explore. The Pacific offers a treasure trove of islands, each with its own story waiting to be told. I cherish my relationships with the people I meet along the way, and every visit to a new island makes me think, 'Where would I sail next?'
From 78 to Sailing Again
At the age of 78, my journey came to a temporary halt. When my wife made me sell all my boats, I was faced with a difficult decision, but one I knew was necessary. My passion for sailing has deep roots, having been influenced by my father and bestafar from Norway. Now, I am excited to start a new voyage up to Nova Scotia, Halifax, known for its exceptional harbor. The promise of sailing under the open sky, with the wind and sea, makes life worthwhile again.
Challenges and Opportunities in Quarantine
Quarantine has added a layer of complexity to my sailing plans. Living on my boat and currently in St Lucia, my next destination is Bonaire, a distance of approximately 500 nautical miles. The current regulations make planning and executing this trip a confusing challenge. A planned test on Friday will hopefully clear the way for a Monday departure. The pandemic has imposed restrictions on my freedom, but it has also provided an opportunity to explore new parts of the world, albeit from a distance.
Caribbean Sailing: A Favorite Spot
Mention my favorite area for sailing, and the Caribbean immediately comes to mind. The temperatures are pleasant, the trade winds are steady, and the islands are plentiful, ensuring a vibrant and exciting environment for every leg of the journey. One area that stands out is the British Virgin Islands (BVI). The islands are so well-spaced that we typically find a safe anchorage every night, often with pirate ships or lively bars and restaurants where we can dine, socialize, and enjoy the music and dance. The warm water is inviting without the need for a wetsuit, and snorkeling is a breeze. The BVI is simply one of the best sailing spots I can think of.
Future Dreams of Sailing
As much as I enjoy the Caribbean and the BVI, I also have dreams of exploring other parts of the world. A summer gunkholing the Maine coast or cruising along the Inside Passage in the Pacific Northwest are dream voyages that remain unrealized. For now, I am content with starting my journey from the Berkeley Marina, sailing around the Farallon Islands, and then making my way to Bodega Bay for an unforgettable night.
While heart problems may pose a reality that can't be ignored, my love for sailing remains strong. Each voyage brings new experiences and memories. My adventures on the high seas continue to fill my heart with excitement and purpose, making life worthwhile on the open water.
