How to Travel Between Providence and Boston: Fast, Safe, and Efficient Methods

Residing in the region and frequently traveling between Providence and Boston, my husband and I nearly always opt for the commuter rail. It's a fast, safe, and efficient way to commute, making it a preferred choice for short trips like dining outings. We can leave for Providence on a weeknight, have dinner, and return to Boston late without worrying about traffic, gas, or parking.

While the commuter rail is an excellent choice, there are other methods that travelers can consider depending on their needs and preferences. In addition to Amtrak and the commuter rail, take a bus, ride-share, taxi, or limo service. These options can be more convenient for various situations and can even be less stressful during peak traffic times.

Diverse Methods of Transportation

In addition to the more sensible options, you might also consider the following:

Amtrak: A train journey can take less than an hour, with one-way costs as low as $12.00 (depending on the time of day). There are as many as 17 trains daily, including a non-stop train in as little as 38 minutes. Walking: For those with more time, a 50-mile walk could take between 1 to 2 days. Air travel: A flight from Providence to a carrier's hub and a connecting flight to Boston can be quite expensive. Biking: You can complete the journey in one day with a bike. Taxi or Cab: A quick and convenient option for those not wanting to deal with public transportation. Hitchhiking: Though popular in the 1960s and 1970s, it’s now less common. It could take about 2 hours and 3 rides, but you would want to give the driver something for gas as a courtesy.

As of November 2017, another option for travel is the RIPTA 1 line (1 Eddy/Hope/Benefit), which goes through both downtown Providence and up to South Attleboro. From there, you can switch to the MBTA. This bus service currently stops by Kennedy Plaza downtown, but it doesn’t stop in front of the train station, so you'd need to transfer a bit by foot. However, it seems to stop at the Attleboro MBTA station.

By Train - An Often Chosen Method

A train is a popular option to travel from Wickford RI through TF Green into Providence, and then into Boston. However, a major issue is the speed, as trains are often too slow for those in a hurry.

Regardless of the method you choose, selecting the right mode of transportation can make your journey between Providence and Boston a comfortable and efficient experience. Whether you prioritize speed, cost, or convenience, there's a method to suit your needs.
