When planning a week-long trip to Hawaii, the choice of which island to visit largely depends on your personal preferences, interests, and what you hope to experience. My absolute favorite far and away, Kauai offers breathtaking scenery, friendly locals, and a good mix of civilization. The north coast is among the most beautiful sites in the world, with stunning beaches, lush forests, and friendly people.

Big Island

My second favorite, the Big Island is perfect for divers, with the best diving in the chain. Kona offers incredible manta diving and snorkeling experiences, and the lava fields are a must-see. The areas around Hilo are great for waterfalls and have a unique hippie charm. The ring road surrounding the island is worth the drive.

Coming in close third, Maui is a top contender. The Road to Hana is absolutely a must, but be prepared to spend the whole day on the journey. The falls, plants, and beaches are spectacular. While I don't have fondness for the city, the island itself offers plenty to experience.

Each island offers its own unique atmosphere, beyond the typical tourist activities like luaus, surf lessons, or souvenir shopping. Oahu, with its city of Honolulu, is the most metropolitan, offering several rural communities. The other islands, like Kauai and Big Island, offer predominantly rural settings, having once been centered around plantation sugar and pineapple.

However, with the closure of major plantations, tourism has become the dominant economic driver. My personal preference, born and raised on Lana’i and currently living on Maui, suggests that the best of all the islands is already explored. Sparsely populated and largely rural, Maui offers plenty of activities and allows visitors to enjoy Hawaii’s beauty at their own pace.

There are numerous restaurants, night life, and 164 beaches accessible via The Bus. The bus service is outstanding, with drivers recognized for their friendly service.

Just an hour outside Waikiki, you can discover some of the most spectacular mountain and scenic views in the country. If you’re planning to stay for a month or more, Oahu can become your personal paradise, with endless activities to keep you occupied 24/7.
