Exploring Amsterdam: The Best Ways to Get Around
When visiting Amsterdam, guests often wonder which is the best way to travel around this picturesque city. Amsterdam is known for its cycling culture, and for good reasons. A bike is not only an eco-friendly way to navigate the city, but it’s also extremely efficient, as the city isn’t too large and most trips take less than half an hour. This makes cycling the preferred mode of transport for both locals and tourists.
For doing local shopping or visiting nearby places like supermarkets, sightseeing, or medical facilities, you can easily walk within most areas. Most stores, such as supermarkets, and essential services like schools and doctors, are within walking distance, adding to the charm of this historic city. This walking convenience adds to the authentic experience of Amsterdam.
Public Transport: A Reliable Alternative
While cycling is the fastest and most popular mode of transport, public transport is also a reliable option. Trains, trams, and metros cover the city with a dense grid, especially in the central areas, with frequent stops. However, it may not be the fastest for short distances, as it involves waiting times and transfers. For example, anything that can be done by bike in 15 minutes will typically take longer to complete by bus, tram, or metro. Despite this, public transport is an excellent choice for reaching destinations outside the walking radius or for longer trips within the city.
Taxis and Car Services
For those who prefer a more comfortable or quicker way to get around, taxi and car services like Uber are readily available. While these are convenient, they can be more expensive. In Amsterdam, parking a personal car is extremely expensive, making it one of the most costly places in Europe to leave your vehicle. Despite this, the benefit of having the ability to park your car right next to where you need to be, as seen in many movies, is a unique advantage of the city, supplemented by the high cost of parking.
Our Experience in Amsterdam
In May 2018, Kathleen and I arrived at Schiphol Airport from Edinburgh and took a comfortable bus to our hotel in the Museum Quarter. From there, it was a short walk to the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museums, where we spent a pleasant afternoon exploring the rich history and art of the city. We also took advantage of the 48-hour Open Top Bus and Canal Boat pass, providing us with a relaxing and scenic tour of Amsterdam. A Canal Boat trip led us to the Rembrandt House, now a museum where the renowned artist lived and created his masterpieces.
Our experience in Amsterdam was a perfect blend of scenic tours and historical exploration. Whether it was through the canals or the streets, Amsterdam offers a unique and convenient way to experience its charm.
