A Journey Through Time and Terrain: My Most Memorable Long-Distance Bicycle Tours

Biking long distances can be an exhilarating adventure, offering a unique perspective on the world. From the vast landscapes of North America to the rich history of Europe, here are three of the most memorable long-distance bicycle tours I’ve taken.

North America - Cycling Across North America in 2001

In 2001, I embarked on an incredible journey across North America. One of the most fascinating experiences was watching the regions transform into each other: river basins into prairie and then into mountains. This diverse landscape provided an endless feast for the eyes and a deeper appreciation for the natural beauty of the continent.

Traversing the Terrain

Each stop brought a different experience, whether through expansive prairies, dense forests, or towering mountains. While cycling, I was constantly reminded of the incredible power of nature and how the land shapes our world. The journey was not just about miles covered but also about the incredible scenery that unfolded with every kilometer.

Europe - A Runic Journey from Canterbury to Rome

Another memorable trip was a cycling tour from Canterbury to Rome, inspired by the travels of Sigeric, the Archbishop of Canterbury in 994 AD. Sigeric left a list of all the towns he visited, which I followed during my journey. This route took me through lush green valleys, ancient castles, and quaint villages, each with its own story to tell.

Rediscovering History

Tracing the steps of Sigeric, I felt a strong connection to the past. The places he visited are now better preserved or in ruins, but the history they carry stands as a testament to our rich cultural heritage. Along the way, I met locals who were excited to share their stories and culture, making the trip not just a physical journey but also an intellectual and emotional one.

Asia - Exploring the Historical Sites of Turkey

Of all the trips, the one that stands out the most for me is cycling around Turkey. The historical sites there are truly fascinating. The well-preserved ruins and artifacts paint a vivid picture of a diverse and dynamic civilization. The architectural wonders of ancient cities like Ephesus and the stunning natural landscapes of sites like Pamukkale made every kilometer of my journey feel like a new discovery.

Cultural Immersion Through Food and People

In addition to the historical sites, the local cuisine was a delight. Turkish food is consistently good, and it’s a joy to sample the regional delicacies. More importantly, the people were incredibly kind and welcoming. Many residents opened their homes and shared meals, creating warm, memorable moments that made the trip truly special.

Across America - A Cultural and Landscape Exploration

For a more diverse and personal perspective, heading from west to east coast via the Monterey-Annapolis route was a fantastic adventure. This journey allowed me to encounter a wide range of cultures, meet new people, and witness the vast landscape of America.

Meeting a Swath of America

With every kilometer, I discovered new sights, new people, and new experiences. Whether it was visiting a bustling city or exploring a peaceful countryside, the journey was enriching. It provided a profound understanding of the cultural and landscape diversity that defines the United States.

Another Highlight: The Natchez Trace

However, if we’re talking about fun, there’s another trip I can’t forget - the Natchez Trace from Baton Rouge to Nashville. This route was idyllic with hardly any traffic and a wonderful road. It was a joy to travel this portion of the trail with my son and best friend, creating cherished memories.

Human Interaction Along the Way

While this part of the journey wasn’t as focused on meeting new people, the combination of natural beauty and companionship made it incredibly enjoyable and memorable. The Natchez Trace offered a break from the hustle and bustle, allowing me to slow down and savor the ride.

Each of these long-distance bike tours has contributed to my love for long journeys and the incredible experiences they bring. Whether it’s exploring new lands, rediscovering history, or simply enjoying the company of friends, long-distance cycling is a wonderful way to connect with the world.
