24 Hours in Napa Valley: The Ultimate Wine and Food Adventure
Imagine you had just 24 hours in Napa Valley, CA, with no restrictions on your time, and multiple objectives in mind: buying excellent wine, tasting great food, and perhaps starting plans for future visits. How would you spend it? In this article, we will outline the best ways to make the most of your time in Napa, from early morning hot air balloon rides to private tastings and dinners at world-renowned establishments.
Optimal Locations and Lodgings
First and foremost, it would be wise to save the time it takes to drive to Paso Robles by staying in Sonoma. There, I would opt for the luxurious Auberge du Soleil in Rutherford for its spa treatments and dinner at the resort. If you can't get a reservation at the renowned The French Laundry, the Auberge du Soleil provides an excellent alternative. However, if you have no restrictions, the The French Laundry in Yountville is definitely worth the visit, no matter the time or cost.
Exploring Paso Robles
For a more affordable yet rich winery experience, a couple of hours south to Paso Robles is where it's at. With over 200 wineries in the area, you can explore without appointments and take home less expensive yet excellent wines. Popular wineries to hit include Turley Zin Alley, Le Covier, Shale Oak, Alta Colina, Linne Calodo, Denner, and Peletierre. Consider buying cases of each, as the selection and value here are remarkable.
Wine and Music Weekend in Napa
Twice a year, Napa hosts a spectacular wine, food, and music weekend. Even with just 24 hours, catching one evening of this event is recommended. Among my favorite wineries to visit is Cliff Lede Vineyard, where you can stay at the Poetry Inn and enjoy world-class wines, planning your next trip there.
Daytime Activities and Dinners
To start the day, consider a hot air balloon ride around 6 am for an incredible view of the valley and other balloons. After a champagne breakfast, embark on a quick hike through the redwoods of Both-Napa Valley State Park. For lunch, look no further than Del Dotto Caves for a unique barrel-tasting experience.
Follow the wine tour with a visit to Robert Mondavi for a tour of a large winery, and O'Brien Estates for a tour of a smaller winery. Finally, conclude the day with a gourmet dinner at Meadowood Napa Valley. If time and budget allow, stay at Bardessono in downtown Yountville or Calistoga Ranch for a memorable experience.
Premium Experiences and Private Tastings
For the ultimate premium experience, begin your day with a hot air balloon ride at sunrise and a champagne breakfast. After exiting the balloon, stop by The Model Bakery in downtown St. Helena for a light snack.
Your first stop should be Spring Mountain Vineyards on Spring Mountain. Sample their exquisite wines, from a vertical of their Elivette blend to library selections of their entire portfolio. Next, have a picnic lunch at Lynmarr Winery, enjoying their garden-sourced cuisine paired with their delicious pinots. Visit Bill Harlan’s Napa Valley Reserve for a personal vintage-tasting experience with the winemaking team.
After a break and some pampering at Auberge du Soleil, head to Yountville for a private dining experience at The French Laundry, one of America's top restaurants.
With the ideas outlined above, you can make the most of your 24 hours in Napa Valley, combining relaxation, adventure, and the best of local cuisine and wine. Don't forget to take some time to enjoy the scenic beauty and culture of Napa Valley while it lasts!
